When it comes to Halloween make-up, it's easy to fall into a lazy list of looks that can be politely described as 'expected'... A last minute set of cat whiskers created with just liquid eyeliner, a lonely solo spider on your cheek, a dubious attempt at photo realistic skull make-up; our go-to Halloween beauty looks are often scary, but for all the wrong reasons.

Which is where Isamaya Ffrench comes in. Backstage make-up artist, beauty brand founder and all round cool kid, Ffrench knows a thing or two about elevating a costume from spooky to chic. Think Halloween, but make it fashion.

Inspired by the scaly skin she created for Dion Lee SS23, Ffrench's Halloween make-up look of choice is part swamp maiden, part mermaid, entirely epic. Plus, all you need is some eyeshadow, a hefty brow glue and some old tights.

Below, Isamaya talks ELLE UK through how to create the only make-up look you need this Halloween. Time to put the eyeliner down...

'First, take the ISAMAYA Browlacq, and brush it into the hair with the comb. Be generous with the amount as this will help for the next step.'

'Use the other end of the comb to section the eyebrow - brush up the first third and angle the hairs in the opposite direction. Using Pros-Aide or any other sort of face glue, stick the remaining two thirds of your brows down until they’re totally flat.

'If you have thick eyebrows, make sure to brush the hairs in every direction to ensure they’re all coated.'

'Leave to dry and press some high coverage powder into the hair to stop the glue from being tacky. Finish your brow blocking by using concealer to cover that part of the brows completely.'

'Take your Browlacq again and reapply as needed in the remaining, visible part of the brows, brushing them up and holding them in place.

'Using an eyeliner or a brow pencil that matches the colour of your hair, draw a line from the tip of the brow towards your hair in a 45deg angle, almost to mimic antennae.'

'Prepare your airbrush, colours, and stencil to do the eyes. You can use water based airbrush colours or you can take your ISAMAYA Industrial palette, crush your favourite pigments, mix them with a mixing medium to reach a liquid consistency and use through the airbrush. If you don’t have an airbrush you can also apply this with a sponge.'

'When your airbrush is ready, take your stencil. It can be anything that has the shape of scales, so fishnet tights will do the trick. Start applying INITIATOR from the industrial palette or another grungy green eyeshadow shade to the temples across to the middle of the eyes, following the angle of your eyebrows.

'Next take a brown eyeshadow - I used BELT from the industrial palette - and spray from the middle of your eye to the inner corner. Repeat on the other side.'

'Apply a cool metallic eyeshadow on the centre of your eyelids and on your cupid’s bow.'

'Apply some of the same eyeshadow on your lips, focusing on the edges.'
